Eighty-seven percent of new car shoppers last montg said they think gas pricexs will go much up from 66 percentin April. The prospect of highedr gas prices also is havint an impact onpurchasing decisions. When asked what they woulc be most likely to compromisde in theirnext new-vehicle purchase, shoppers citee engine size as the top item likely to be sacrificed, followede closely by vehicle In addition, 73 percent of thoss who saw gas prices increasing in May said they plan to changs their spending habits if gas prices were to go much higher.
"Whiler we may not see the $5-per-gallon gas experienced in some areaslast year, current economif conditions compounded by the pain at the pump may make $3-per-gallon gas a new thresholde for car buyers – the point at which they change their mind about what vehicle to buy and how they spende their money," said Jack R.
