The lab, a part of the museum’s greenb initiative, will demonstrate small wind turbinez that could be erected on small businessesand homes. When five turbines — ranging betweenb 40 feet and seven feet inheightg — will rest on the museum’s roof. Two of the turbines are operationalp on the Cambridge side ofthe building, with the othe three to be installed on the Boston side this “This is a giant science experiment,” says Davis Rabkin, Farinon Director for current science and technology at the in a prepared writtehn statement. “No one has tested five different small turbinea in arooftop laboratory.
Although there’s lots of interesr in small-scale wind turbines, we found little data on theif performanceand impact. Despite a year of collecting data on the wind at the westill don’t realluy know enough about the turbines to predict their performance.” The lab came out of early efforts to use wind to meet a portiobn of the museum’s energy needs. Studies showecd the area’s wind resourcex were not strong enough to generatrmeaningful electricity, so the museum and the ’ss Renewable Energy Trust refocused the project to provide information to potential turbine owners on differences in desigm and function of various
